Refraction is the bending of a wave as it passes into a medium where its speed is different.

In this photo, waves from a light source are slowed down and bent as they pass through a glass jar. The spectrum becomes visible and for a brief moment we can directly observe a medium that largely goes unseen, light energy.

Star light seen from a singular point (the lens) which is rotating on a flat plane for 9 minutes. The rotation of the camera creates concentric circles of blues, yellows and reds... this as a way of exploring principles of rotation, perspective and qualities of light.

Road To Hana - Maui
While stopping to pick up some fresh banana bread from a road side vendor, I noticed this beautiful, vibrant tree backlit by the sun. It's colorful bark, deep green leaves and pink flowers in full bloom made for a gorgeous scene. I dropped down to grass level to shoot up and get the branches stretching out overhead. I also adjusted my position to block out any man-made structure in the background. This photograph "Tree Of Life - Hana", is made out of 4 images stitched together to give a wider view. Then, to restore the way to tree actually appeared in person, I enhanced the image's vibrancy and contrast. See "Before and After" shots after the break....

After yet another wonderful day on the island, I snapped this photo of a young couple walking down the shores of Paia Bay. The sun was setting and everything was aglow with warm light. This image is made out of 5 photos stitched together and enhanced slightly to show more detail on the beach. A simple shot, but I enjoy it :) Hope you do too. Aloha, Matthew.

We were on a grassy sea cliff during dusk and got creative with the scene to produce several unique images. They were so great and easy to work with... The tree's stump is near the center of the image, then stretches out over nearly an entire acre, reconnecting to the ground in many places to support the weight of its long branches. They're finished!

I can't express what a joy it has been to work on this series, "California Oaks". Many days were spent waking up for sunrise, hiking into our beautiful State Parks and making photographs of these strong and resilient trees. To me, they are symbols of life and true prosperity... they live in harmony with their environment and never take more than they need. In observing them, I have come to learn a lot from their wisdom and grace.

Each image is placed in a gorgeous and warm walnut frame that I constructed by hand specifically for the photograph. Combined with a double matte, picture glass and hand signature. Each of these is truly one-of-a-kind.

Story: This image was made just after sunrise in the 'Upper Las Virgenes Open Space Preserve' (formerlly Ahmanson Ranch). In 2003, this land was saved from development by the 'Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy' who purchased the 3000 acres from Washington Mutual. Today, these two oaks stand looking over miles of lush, grassy hills and will live out their years as a testament to the efforts of conservation.
